that earn their keep.

Plenty of garages in Thorold South are workshops first and parking second. Dust, sawdust and frequent openings are hard on rollers and photo-eyes, so we fit sealed bearings, protect the sensors, and set the opener for the extra cycles, so the door keeps pace with whatever you are building inside.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 55 in 100 homes · older homes
  • About 55% of homes in Thorold were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Original openers in older neighbourhoods often predate photo-eye sensors and rolling-code remotes. Bringing one up to date means a quieter motor, sensors that stop the door for a child or pet, and remotes that cannot be copied from the driveway, all installed in a single visit.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 69% of homes in Thorold (2021 Census).Detached houses commonly have attached two-car garages with a wide double door, which is a heavy door on a pair of torsion springs. Spring and cable work on these doors is done as a matched set so the door lifts level and the opener carries only its intended load.

Anatomy of a garage door

ScaleNot to scale

A well-set spring system means the door will stay wherever you leave it, half open included. That is the standard we work to on every spring and cable job.

  1. Part 1The panels

    Garage Door Panel Replacement

Rust has crept along the bottom edge of the lowest section. What began as bubbling paint is now a soft, flaking strip, the seal retainer is working loose, and a screwdriver pressed against the worst spot goes through the steel.

  2. Part 2The springs

    Torsion Spring Replacement

After pulling the red release cord, you tried lifting the door yourself and it would barely leave the floor. A door that used to glide up with one hand now takes real effort, which points to the counterbalance rather than the opener.

  3. Part 3The cables

    Garage Door Cable Replacement

The door went up as usual this morning, then stopped a third of the way with one corner higher than the other. It is wedged at an angle in the opening, the opener is humming, and nothing you press will move it.

  4. Part 4Tracks and rollers

    Garage Door Roller Replacement

The door shudders as it rises, worst where the track bends from vertical to horizontal. Watching from inside, you can see one section rock from side to side while the others sit still, and the whole door lands with a clunk.

  5. Part 5The opener

Garage Door Opener Diagnosis and Repair

The door goes up perfectly. Coming down is the trouble: partway to the floor it stops, climbs back to the top, and the light on the opener blinks at you.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep using the door while I wait for the section?

If the damage is cosmetic and the hinges, rollers and cables are sound, the door can usually stay in service. If a section is folded, a hinge has pulled out or a cable has slackened, the technician braces the door, disconnects the opener and asks you to leave it closed, because the opener pulling on a weakened section can turn a repairable door into a larger job. You will be told clearly which applies.

Why did the hinge crack in the first place?

Steel flexed often enough eventually cracks, and several things speed that up. A door out of balance is dragged by the opener, and every hinge takes the strain. A seized roller twists its hinge on each trip. A track out of line pinches the panels at the curve. A wide panel without a strut flexes at the joint. Corrosion at the low hinges thins the steel. The technician looks for which of these was at work so the new hinge is spared the same stress.

Will the new spring look the same as the old one?

Not necessarily, and that is fine. The paint colour on the winding cone or coil is a code that identifies wire size and wind direction, and different suppliers use their own schemes, so a matched replacement can carry a different colour than the spring it replaces. What matters is that the wire size, diameter, length and wind direction suit the door's weight and height, which is confirmed by the balance test.

The opener light blinks when I press close. Is that the sensors?

Very often, yes. A blinking bulb after a close command is the opener reporting that its sensor circuit is unhappy, and the count of blinks is the message: one common family uses ten flashes for the sensors, while a short two-flash pattern usually means the wall control's lock button is on. Newer units add arrow codes that separate a blocked beam from a cut or reversed wire. Counting the flashes and telling the technician the make helps identify the cause before the visit.
